New Analysis: Market Insights Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) – 2021
NexantECA, the Energy and Chemicals Advisory company publishes a new report on Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT)
Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), one of the most important thermoplastic polyesters, is semi-crystalline in structure and produced by the transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) to form bishydroxybutyl terephthalate (bis-HBT). PBT offers a valuable combination of technical properties with its exceptional resistance to heat, creep, and chemicals, along with its good processability and excellent electrical properties. Initially, PBT was first used in the textile industry. However, the most important applications for PBT are for products used in the automotive, electrical, electronics, telecommunication, and precision engineering sectors. Automotive applications are the largest end-use for PBT.
Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT)
Global demand for PBT declined sharply in the first half of 2020 but recovered in the second half underpinned by higher outputs in automotive, appliances, electronics/electrics. Consumer demand for home devices has increased hence PBT demand from appliance production have surged, particularly in China. As consumers have been spending more time at home to prevent the spread of COVID-19, appliances which are part of the home office setup have been reported to have risen substantially with fiscal stimulus also occuring in several regions, e.g., North America, Europe. This has fueled PBT demand for use in production of electrical and electronic parts as well as appliance parts such as oven handles, iron handles and bases and motor brackets.
